I’m a reasonably experienced home espresso user with a predilection for light to extremely light roast espresso. I feel it’s worth giving a brief introduction here since I think this will go beyond the border of EAF and newer users might not be as familiar with my background. Thoughts on the Odyssey Espresso Argos from Shotwell Josiah Henderson, Owner of Little Light Coffee And when it is, I believe that the combination of the artisan lever espresso experience and quality steam in a compact and attractive package will be a unique proposition that is currently unmatched in the espresso machine market. I’m sure that I’m not the only espresso fan who has been captivated by curiosity in what a lever machine would have to offer, and so I can’t wait for the vision of the Odyssey Espresso team to be fully realized in the Argos. The only question that remains is how well the Odyssey espresso team will be able to bring their design to completion in a final production model. Steam power also proved to be adequately powerful to pour good latte art in about the same time as I currently do on our Decent Espresso machines. This would be a luxury to anyone coming from a larger pro-sumer machine. Ergonomically, the Argos doesn’t have the same advantages as other large machines, but the design of the Argos leverages it’s small boiler capacity to provide espresso-ready temp and steaming ability with a very short warm-up. All that while being much more compact than a Decent (which is already considered to be a small machine).

Shots were thick with good flavor, and a richness that I don’t always get out of my Decent Espresso machine without all conditions being ideal. I pulled shots of two coffees that I’m familar with on the Decent, also using the same grinder and burrs. The testing I did was with the Monolith Kafatek grinders, the shots pulled using the 9 bar spring and they were great. While there are a few great options for lever machines on the market today, there are none like the Argos that can easily swap between a 9 bar spring, a 6 bar spring, and direct pressure (like the Flair). I’ve used a variety of machines from those marketed toward hobbyists to standard commercial machines. While I obviously can’t speak to fit and finish of the final production version, I think that the potential of the Argos for providing a customized lever-machine experience will be unrivalled. I was excited to have two opportunities to work with a pre-production version of the Argos while visiting the Odyssey Espresso HQ. This is where I believe the Argos would fill a need for a great many people while offering a better and more consistent espresso experience. While the quality of the espresso from something like the Flair is great, especially as it offers more control than other similarly-priced espresso machines do, the Flair is lacking in two major areas. So much so that a few of my fellow business owners have been using the Flair espresso maker to serve drinks in their coffee trucks and businesses. But that landscape is slowly changing, and as we have met more of the young coffee community and entrepreneurs, it has become apparent that the home and pro-sumer market has few options for exceptional espresso.
